The achievement of 650km in 6 days ride through the amazing Mekong delta!
I embarked on my journey from the bustling city of Phnom Penh, heading towards the historic Long Binh border. After an overnight stay, I eagerly crossed into Vietnam the next morning. My plan was to reach the vibrant city of Can Tho by the second night. However, I found myself thoroughly enchanted by the scenic ride along the majestic Mekong River, captivated by the vibrant life and rich culture that flourished along its banks.
On the second night, I stayed in the charming city of Long Xuyen. I spent the evening exploring the city, wandering through its lush parks and quaint alleys. It was heartwarming to witness Vietnamese families enjoying their meals together at home, undisturbed by the usual hustle and bustle of scooters and pedestrians.
I was fortunate to stumble upon a cozy little restaurant that served fried chicken with an incredibly delicious sauce. I savored every bite! On my way back to the hotel, I stopped at a small grocery store to buy some water and beer. I was delighted to find Saigon beer, which I brought back to my room for a relaxing moment.
On my third night in Can Tho, I decided to explore more of the small villages along the ride. It was a moment of true freedom, soloing through the countryside on my mountain bike. Being the only foreigner around, many locals mistook me for Vietnamese. Some were proud of me, while others seemed a bit confused and ignored me. This is why I love Vietnam; it always makes me want to see more.
When I arrived in Can Tho, it was pouring cats and dogs. It was challenging to find a hotel since my phone wasn’t waterproof. Luckily, I met a local who directed me to the nearest hotel, the Welcome Inn. There, I made friends with two Aussie guys named Jack and a Vietnamese American named Lou. We had great conversations about everything in Can Tho and the most touristy places in the country, giving me lots of ideas to do things differently.
I decided not to go to Saigon. Instead, Bac Lieu became my destination for the day. I departed along the river of Can Tho, seeking connections to the small trails of the delta. Riding through the beautiful villages along narrow paths, I almost forgot I was on a bike. This is the feeling bikers live for! I took pictures and videos along the way, with children waving hello and goodbye from their houses. Fortunately, there was no rain, so I spent the whole day riding through the small villages. I was so engrossed in exploring the water and road systems around the delta that I didn’t even feel tired. The people and villages were simply beautiful.
I arrived in Bac Lieu at 7 PM and easily found a hotel. After a shower and some rest, I went out to the street to look for a Saigon beer to enjoy the rest of the evening.
After enjoying a delightful night in Bac Lieu, I set off early in the morning for Ra Gu. It had been raining all day long. Initially, I started along the coast, battling strong winds. Eventually, I decided to follow the delta and take the small village roads to Ra Gu.
I passed through several picturesque villages, enjoying the ride and taking photos of the charming houses and gardens along the way. For lunch, I stopped at a small local restaurant. The elderly seller curiously asked me why I was doing this and where I came from.
With a smile, I replied that I love cycling and that I am from Cambodia. In Vietnam, fewer people speak English, but fortunately, I know some Vietnamese. We had a lot of fun trying to understand each other.
After enjoying my lunch, I continued my ride to Ra Gu. The journey was challenging due to the relentless rain. Exhausted, I finally arrived in Ra Gu and ended my ride at a guest house.
After recovering from my tiredness, I regained my energy and set off for Ha Tien. It was the most challenging ride I’ve ever had! The wind grew stronger and stronger. I tried to follow the coast again, but it wasn’t a good idea. So, I switched to the main road until I reached Ha Tien. In the evening, I enjoyed a delightful seafood dinner by the seaside.
I was thrilled with my special treat and overnight stay in Ha Tien.
After breakfast, I set off for Kampot. After 7 km, I arrived at the border checkpoint and crossed into Cambodia. I was happy to complete this amazing ride in Vietnam, but I still had 35 km to go to Kampot. I took the coastal route; it was windy, but I enjoyed seeing people hanging out along the seaside with food and drinks. I also relished the joy of hearing the Cambodian language around me again; it made me feel at home. Along the coast, there were many small bungalows and beautiful houses.
Upon arriving in the city of Kampot, I checked into a guesthouse and prepared to celebrate my achievements. Kampot is a small town with a lively center where you can see some expats and tourists along the river at night. I liked the town; it has plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy the nightlife. That night, I finished at 2 am at the guesthouse.
The next morning, I was ready to hop on the bus back to Siem Reap for life and work. It was simply the best experience.
